Diagnostic Methods for Contact Allergy to Metals

چکیده
The epicutaneous patch testing is regarded as the best method of diagnosis for allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Patch tests can be used to confirm a suspected allergic contact dermatitis and either to recommend avoidance of particular products or to recommend alternative products in a particular patient. It is based upon re-exposing the skin of the patient to suspected allergens under controlled conditions. Different test sites and test tapes can be used and different variables such as intrinsic penetration capacity, concentration, exposure time and vehicle can be changed to obtain an optimal bioavailability of the haptens. The ideal patch test should cause as few adverse reactions as possible, and be reproducible and specific. In this paper, the application fields, the advantages and the disadvantages of the patch tests are reviewed. Other diagnostic methods as the open test, the provocative test, the repeated open application test and the photopatch test are also discussed.

Allergic and nonallergic rhinitis and skin sensitization to metals: is there a link?
Summary Background. Chromium, Cobalt and Nickel are responsible for contact dermatitis, that is largely prevalent in the general population. They can act also as irritants in the upper and lower respiratory airways. Also rhinitis (allergic and nonallergic) is a high prevalence disorder. Both diseases could share some common inflammatory mechanisms, but the clinical association between skin sens...
متن کاملPatch testing: what allergists should know.
Patch testing is a standardized, in vivo diagnostic test for type IV hypersensitivity reactions, resulting in allergic contact dermatitis, which clinically resembles eczema. Common allergens include fragrance chemicals, hair dyes, metals, rubber accelerators and preservatives. Known allergens at particular concentrations in optimal vehicles are tested on the upper back under occlusion for 2 day...
متن کاملMolecular Mechanisms of Nickel Allergy.
Allergic contact hypersensitivity to metals is a delayed-type allergy. Although various metals are known to produce an allergic reaction, nickel is the most frequent cause of metal allergy. Researchers have attempted to elucidate the mechanisms of metal allergy using animal models and human patients. Here, the immunological and molecular mechanisms of metal allergy are described based on the fi...
متن کاملTitanium: a review on exposure, release, penetration, allergy, epidemiology, and clinical reactivity.
Exposure to titanium (Ti) from implants and from personal care products as nanoparticles (NPs) is common. This article reviews exposure sources, ion release, skin penetration, allergenic effects, and diagnostic possibilities. We conclude that human exposure to Ti mainly derives from dental and medical implants, personal care products, and foods. Despite being considered to be highly biocompatib...

BACKGROUND The role of contact allergy in oral cavity disease processes is unknown. OBJECTIVE We sought to determine the prevalence of contact allergy to flavorings, preservatives, dental acrylates, medications, and metals in patients with oral disease. METHODS Patients were tested with an 85-item oral antigen screening series. Data were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS We evaluated 331 ...
